Synopsis

 

 

Set in the 1930s, "Sinebada" is a short film about a Papua New Guinean boy who discovers his older brother is having a forbidden love affair with a white woman, but when he unwittingly exposes the affair to police, his worst nightmare comes true as his brother is hanged by the neck and killed.

"Sinebada" translates to 'White Woman' or 'Big Woman' in the Motuan language, and is the name of a 10 minute film being developed by Veialu Aila-Unsworth. 

 

Set in PNG the 1930s, the Short is an historical drama which puts a spotlight on the 1928 White Women's Protection Ordinance which made it illegal for interracial relationships in PNG at that time.

 

Veialu, who herself is of Papua New Guinean and European decent, developed the script with New Zealand playwright, Albert Belz, and BlueSkin Films' script consultant, Catherine Fitzgerald.
